While there are differences in the estimated recorded supplies of palladium between Johnson & Matthey
Platinum 2005 Report and the GFMS Platinum & Palladium Survey 2005, it is acknowledged by both sources that Russia is the largest producer of palladium, accounting for
almost half of the global palladium supply; between 2.8 million and 3.8
million ounces in 2004.
In addition to being the largest platinum supplier by region, South Africa
is also the second largest palladium supplier by region. Palladium production in 2004
totaled 2.5 million ounces (33% of total palladium
supply) and the growth rate for by-product palladium
is expected to grow during 2005 due to the commencement of mine expansion projects.
North American production of palladium increased
in 2004 to approximately over 1 million ounces, almost entirely due to an increase in PGM production at Inco.
